Ballast water management is required to regulate ballast water. Ballast water is used to improve the draught, stability and strength of ships that are not or not fully loaded. Shipping carries between 3 and 5 billion tonnes of ballast water annually. This water must be able to be unloaded safely and cleanly. Cleaning the ballast water is relatively simple: for example, a ship can catch ballast water in Germany and unload it in Rotterdam. In order to regulate this properly, a ballast water management plan is essential.
Carelessly discharging ballast water is harmful to our ecosystem. In order to guarantee the safety of ballast water, rules have therefore been drawn up that every ocean-going vessel is obliged to comply with. These rules are summarised in a so-called ballast water management plan. Such a protocol makes it clear which conditions are met. The OceanGuard system supplied by Reikon ensures that all thousands of marine species in the ballast water are safely exterminated by using certain processes to clean the ballast water.
As I'm sure you understand, there's a lot involved in such a plan. For example, there must be a solid ballast water treatment installation in the ship. Reikon is happy to tell you more about your options in this area.
